Landfill
A solid waste landfill is a complex, engineered system with many components working
together to assure that environmental standards for containment are achieved. There
are four basic components to consider in the conceptual phase of constructing a
solid waste landfill; the hydrogeology of the land being considered, the bottom
liner, a leachate collection plan and the landfill cover system. All of these are
critical and have many sub-components depending on specific needs, but a correctly
designed and constructed bottom liner is most critical to successful waste management.
Landfill liners prevent leachate from exploring hydraulic connections to the surrounding
environment, particularly groundwater. Bottom liners can be as simple as a single
membrane layer and as complex as a “double-composite” system where multiple layers
of membrane, clay components and drainage medium are combined to provide ultimate
prevention.
